2006 Peregrine Ridge American Oak Blend – Shiraz

A small portion of the crop was held aside and aged in American oak – often the preferred partner for shiraz in Australia, adding spice and vanilla to often very ripe fruit flavours.

The more elegant fruit profile of central Heathcote shiraz presents a different picture for the framing of American oak and it’s fascinating comparing this with its French oak sibling. Vanilla and cocoa lift the red/blue fruit characters of middle Heathcote – attractive and bolder than the French model, while the palate shows an edge of broader tannins and more obvious oak flavours.

All this certainly adds a splash of immediate appeal, although it will age well while always keeping that extra element of oak spice.
