“Other New Releases
2005 Peregrine Ridge Limited Release – Shiraz

* * * * * (5 stars)

Tasted both under cork and screw-cap, both were in excellent condition, and both showing secondary maturation characters. Both showed sweet Heathcote red fruit shiraz and ripe red tomato (real heirloom ones, in season) and a hint of background pepper …

Stelvin: Less developed with more defined fruit with hints of fresh dark tobacco, and a longer, sweeter palate. This will take a few more years before it reaches the development of the wine under cork.

Cork: Sweet fruit with earth and polished leather developing, in a mature stage of development and softer finish.

If you prefer development in your red (and drinking it soon) go for the cork, if you’re intending to cellar it grab the screw cap version.

“2005 Peregrine Ridge [Limited Release] Shiraz is a delightful wine and indicative of how good some of the rarely seen producers can be.  Lovely sweet, ripe core of fruit here.  The 2006 Peregrine Ridge [American Oak] isn’t bad either though not quite the finesse of the older wine.”

“Remarkable how different the wine is to the [2005] American Oak Blend, both in structure and flavour terms; this is tighter and longer, although the fruit base is presumably identical; will live longer.”  5 Glasses; Rating 94

“This wine was clearly the top in the Heathcote class. It reflects what we expect from the region – vibrancy, spiciness, fineness and suppleness. Too many recent Heathcotes have been ponderous, over-oaked and overly alcoholic. “This one restores our faith.”
